The Under are:
Daniel Costa—electric guitar and vocals
Jason Walker—electric bass guitar
Randy Odierno—drums
Combine the finest elements of progressive rock, metal, and punk with a strong songwriting emphasis and a style that often strays from convention. Then swill the lessons taught by classic acts such as Rush and Black Sabbath into an ocean filled in with other musical and artistic inspiration. The result is nothing short of an epic sound that is thoughtful, aggressive, brooding, and simultaneously melodic. For those who seek this kind of substance in their music, we welcome you to The Under.
At the turn of the century, a sluggish Miami music scene bid farewell to the Boston-bound Dan Costa. Winding compositions and an atypical songwriting approach were his musical trademarks. While this was lost on many a potential bandmate, it made perfect sense to Jason Walker when the two met at a party in ‘04. A veteran of the Boston music scene, not to mention being completely obsessed with Voivod and Black Flag, Jason became an instant partner for any potential music project. Although Dan soon realized that he had traveled 1,200 miles to meet and jam with…another Floridian.
It wasn’t long before the guys met Randy Odierno of the legendary metal outfits Disrupt and Grief. In an online ad Randy had made no mention of his former bands, instead choosing to pronounce a deep enthusiasm for prog rock and doom metal. One super-long phone call and a jam session later, The Under was born.
Since 2006 The Under has played several Boston-area venues, including the Middle East, Great Scott, TT the Bear’s, the Bulfinch Yacht Club, O’Briens and the Abbey Lounge. Now, they look to continue to expand their audience with their first release, a four-song EP simply titled The Under. In the short time following its release, the CD has cracked the Noise’s Top 30 Radio Chart for Boston releases which is compiled using playlists from WAAF, WBCN, WFNX, WMBR, WMFO, WTCC, and WZBC. The Noise has also stated in a thoughtful and positive review that on this EP The Under “are here to remind us of the Rock that is in Prog Rock.” Â
For music that is rife with meaning, atmosphere, and innovation, the search begins and ends with The Under.
